The strategic retention of nursing leadership in Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs) - specifically for Directors of Nursing (DONs) and Chief Nursing Officers (CNOs) - is no longer just an HR goal; it's a critical operational necessity for 2026. The reality is that a Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) or Director of Nurses (DON) tenure in a post-acute organization is very fragile for the first 6-12 months. The role is far broader than just clinical leadership and includes managing CMS and CDC regulations, staffing, organizational culture, survey readiness, conflict management, and budget pressures.
